The IIHS, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has put a new emphasis on testing pedestrian detection technology, ranking the 2019 Nissan Rogue with an Advanced rating.
The new Nissan Rogue received the high rating from its standard Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection technology. The system monitors all forward movement and engages the brakes if it detects an imminent forward collision, even with something the size of a person.
The IIHS reported, “Reducing pedestrian crashes is the goal of new IIHS ratings of automatic emergency braking systems that can detect and brake for people on foot. The ratings come amid renewed focus on the problem of crashes involving pedestrians. Autobrake systems that can detect and brake for pedestrians are one important countermeasure to address the problem.” Most forward collision detection systems are able to detect and prevent vehicle crashes rather than pedestrian.
The IIHS started testing vehicles for the quality of pedestrian autobrake systems recently. It branched from testing started in 2013 on evaluations of front crash prevention systems and the quality of headlights.
David Aylor, the IIHS’ manager of Active Safety Testing, said, “We want to encourage manufacturers to include pedestrian detection capabilities as they equip more of their vehicles with automatic emergency braking systems. We also want to arm consumers with information about these systems so they can make smart choices when shopping for a new vehicle.”
With the new criteria, the IIHS hopes to provide better information on the overall safety of new vehicles. Earning a Superior, Advanced, or Basic rating, the 2019 Nissan is setting itself up as one of the top ranked safety SUVs. The rating also comes with the accolade Consumer Guide’s 2019 Best Buy, the fifth year in a row.
Other standard features on four of its five trims include Rear Automatic Braking, Blind Spot Warning, and Intelligent Lane Intervention.
